Initial Campus Announcement - April 2007

Starting this summer, and continuing into fall, some major changes to the University of Idaho employee e-mail service will begin.  Information Technology Services (ITS) will be rolling out new e-mail, calendaring and collaboration software to replace the current @uidaho.edu e-mail system for faculty and staff.  This upgrade will not affect the existing student e-mail migration to "VandalMail Live".

What are some highlights of the new e-mail system?
  • Comprehensive, feature rich access for:
    • e-mail, including increased storage capacity
    • calendaring (at no cost to the user)
    • contact and address list management
    • task management
    • notes
    • ...and other productivity tools.
  • Enhanced web-based e-mail access
  • Calendaring access will be available to all employees
  • Access system features from anywhere through a web browser or use Microsoft Outlook on your desktop

What are some of the common questions concerning the new e-mail system?

  • Is there anything I need to do to prepare for this upgrade?
    • Not at this time.  Additional information about the upgrade process and training opportunities will be available later in the summer.

  • Will I need to use Outlook exclusively with the new system?  Is Pegasus/Eudora/Thunderbird going away?
    • No, existing IMAP, POP and SMTP service will remain available after the upgrade.  To use the full features of the new system you will need to use Outlook or "Outlook Web Access".

  • Will my e-mail address change?  Will I lose any of my existing e-mail folders and messages?
    • No, your e-mail address will remain the same and all existing e-mail folders and messages will be retained through the upgrade process.

  • What will happen to OnTime calendaring?
    • The OnTime service will be retired at some time after the new e-mail system becomes available.

  • Will training be available for the new system?
    • Yes, we will have training sessions specifically for department technical support personnel in late June.  In September we will provide general campus training sessions.  Additional information will be provided this summer.

  • Where can I find additional information about the e-mail upgrade?
